One of the ways public health is present in communities is through science festivals. Science festivals are community-wide events dedicated to celebrating the world of science and technology.
Science Festival Goals
- Establish science as part of local culture
- Attract the attention and participation of people living and working in the community
- Bring the public into direct contact with scientists and engineers
- Provide new opportunities for scientists and engineers to get involved in public outreach
These festivals are an opportunity for healthcare education organizations as well. Nursing and medicine are science-based careers that attract curious and caring people into their fields.
The Atlanta Science Festival took place in March. The Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University participated, giving curious thinkers hands-on access to learning at a health and wellness booth.
Pocket Nurse donated stethoscopes to the nursing college’s booth. Michael Anderson, major account manager, was the contact person. He says, “They are a customer of ours. They mentioned they were having a health and wellness fair for children. I donated the stethoscopes because they were to benefit the children who are the future of nursing in our country.”
Michael continued, “The United States has an extreme shortage of nurses at this time and will in the future. I felt that Pocket Nurse founder Anthony [Battaglia, MS, BSN, RN] built this company around helping others. Since he was a nurse, this donation would be a good thing for him and our company to help out the future nurses of America.”
A nursing professor from the Georgia Baptist College recently sent this email to Michael:

I once again wanted to think you so much for your donations of stethoscopes for the Atlanta Science Festival. I cannot tell you how excited the kids were when we told them they could keep the stethoscope!

Donations to participating organizations are just one way Pocket Nurse supports the educational community.
