Nurse-owned-and-operated Pocket Nurse® has a successful history of providing solutions, equipment, products, and supplies to help provide realistic educational experiences for healthcare students in the classroom and simulation lab, ultimately resulting in better patient safety.
When you think of Pocket Nurse, think about more than products. While we are the leading supplier of educational solutions for healthcare in the classroom and simulation lab, we are something more.
What makes us successful and the only company of our kind? While many answers are possible, the leading answer is our nurse ownership and resulting employment of experienced nursing staff.
Pocket Nurse understands what educators need in the classroom. We stay current with challenges that bedside care providers face each day as they strive to provide the safest and best care possible to patients.
The focus at Pocket Nurse is on what can be added or done better, quicker and smarter, to partner with healthcare professionals who work diligently to make a difference in the classroom and simulation lab because it translates into better patient outcomes.
To understand why patient outcomes are such a focus, look at the stats below.
Patient Safety Statistics
Source: "United for Patient Safety," National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF)] Progress Report
- Medication errors harm an estimated 1.5 million Americans each year, resulting in more than $3.5 billion in additional medical costs.
- About 1 in 25 U.S. patients suffer at least one infection contracted during the course of their hospital care.
- About 1 in 10 U.S. patients experience an adverse condition, such as a pressure ulcer or fall, during hospitalization.
- In the United States each year there are 611,100 deaths from heart disease, 574,800 cancer-related deaths, and 44,000 to 440,000 estimated deaths from preventable medical errors in hospitals [emphasis added].
- According to the World Health Organization there is a 1-in-1,000,000 risk of being injured during air travel while there is a 1-in-300 risk of being harmed while in a healthcare setting.
“Patient safety” is defined by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) as “the prevention of harm to patients.” Emphasis is placed on the system of care delivery that prevents errors; learns from the errors that do occur; and is built on a culture of safety that involves healthcare professionals, organizations, and patients.
The glossary at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Network website expands upon the definition of prevention of harm: “Freedom from accidental or preventable injuries produced by medical care.” Pocket Nurse endorses AHRQ, their philosophy, and their TeamSTEPPS program, along with the NPSF, The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and those at the forefront of healthcare improvements in education and care at the bedside.
The future of Pocket Nurse will also consist of having an even stronger reputation as a "go-to" organization to assist you with generating ideas, innovations, and expanding our product line as we build stronger partnerships and offer more solutions in assisting healthcare professionals with providing safer patient care.
